Sport and Music

Sport at Buckholme Towers

Sport plays a key role in life at BuckholmeTowers.

As well as a full in-school PE curriculum, including dance and gymnastics, for all age groups, there is a whole range of sporting activities which take place off-site.

The school grounds include a netball court and a 5-a-side football pitch which are used daily by children across the age range. In order to ensure that we meet the demands of the curriculum and the needs of the pupils, we also take full advantage of the excellent facilities that lie on our doorstep. For example:

All pupils in Year 3 receive swimming lessons at a local pool.

All pupils in the Year 1 through to Year 7 receive tennis lessons from LTA qualified coaches at East Dorset Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

For football, netball, rugby, cricket, rounders and athletics, pupils use Whitecliff andPoole Parks, both of which are a short walk away.

In the Summer term and during the first half of the autumn term, there is a watersports option for all the pupils in Years 3 – 7. This is run by Rockley Watersports on the lake in Poole Park and includes sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and Dragon Boat racing!

Pupils in Years 2 – 7 compete with a number of schools in the area in sports such as football, netball, cricket, swimming, rugby, athletics and tennis.

2012 has seen the launch of our ‘Every child a Sailor’ initiative and the Buckholme Towers Sailing Academy.

A dozen or so pupils from years 1 to 4 have emabarked on an ‘intense’ 20 week course, in partnership with Parkstone Yacht Club (under the RYA ‘On Board’ Scheme) and the International Optimist Class Association. By the autumn, they should all be competent sailors, with many of them beginning to race. It is a fantastic opportunity for our children, particularly given the wonderful sailing facilities that surround us.
